On Friday, April 11th, Aspire Private British School’s Year 13 students, accompanied by their teacher Mrs Thomson, proudly represented the school at the Moot Court Competition in Limassol. The event gave students a valuable opportunity to step into the shoes of legal professionals and gain first-hand insight into the workings of the Supreme Court.
The day began with ice-breaker activities and friendly team-building exercises like the “gossip-box,” creating a relaxed, welcoming environment and encouraging cooperation between students from different schools.
Aspire’s team acted as the appellant in Case 1 – R v. Morrison, defending 18-year-old James Morrison, who has Autism Spectrum Disorder and had been convicted of aiding and abetting the murder of a police officer. The students argued that the conviction lacked strong evidence and that vital legislation relating to Morrison’s condition had been ignored. Their well-reasoned arguments and confident delivery led to a unanimous ruling in their favour by the panel of judges.
In recognition of their outstanding performance, the team was awarded “Funniest Speech” and received an Honourable Mention for Best Appellant. Special congratulations go to:
- Ben Szumski – Winner of the Funniest Speech Award
- Spencer Blackledge – Honourable Mention for Best Appellant
We are incredibly proud of the dedication and enthusiasm our students brought to the competition. Their success is a testament to their hard work and to the values we uphold at Aspire Private British School.
