SUMMARY:1st April Bank Holiday
DESCRIPTION:Cyprus National Day \nBank Holiday and therefore the school is closed. \nOn this day Greek Cypriots commemorate the start of the uprising against the British rule in 1955. \nOn the 1st of April 1955\, the EOKA organisation whose aim was the unification with Greece through armed struggle\, started their guerrilla campaign\, targeting British military installations on the island. \nThe campaign against the British lasted until 1959. On August 16th 1960\, a cease-fire was reached and Cyprus attained independence after the Zurich and London Agreement between the United Kingdom\, Greece and Turkey. \nFor this day special events take place in schools so that children are made aware of the island’s struggle for freedom. Also\, every year there is a massive military parade held in Nicosia. \nAt Aspire Private British School\, students will engage with a variety of activities in the context of their Greek lessons to commemorate this event and its importance. In an alternative activity to symbolise peace\, the students will form the outline of the island of Cyprus using rope and place olive branches and paper doves around it as a figure of freedom.

SUMMARY:Cyprus National Day Celebrations
DESCRIPTION:To commemorate 1st April\, Cyprus National Day\, we have decided to consider the importance of independence\, peace and freedom by creating a whole-school ‘figure of freedom’. \nIn an attempt to symbolise peace\, the students will form a large outline of the island of Cyprus on the playground using rope\, students will then attach white paper cut-out doves and olive branches around the outline to create a visual piece of artwork. \nThe whole school community including parents\, grandparents\, school alumni and Y7-9 students who are not physically present with us at the moment will cut out doves and send into school for us to attach to our ‘figure of freedom’ on Wednesday. Messages of hope will be added to the doves and we hope this will stand as a figure of freedom and unity in these difficult times.

SUMMARY:200th Anniversary of Greek Independence
DESCRIPTION:Every year on the 25th of March\, Greeks from all over the world celebrate Greek Independence Day. This year marks the bicentennial anniversary of the Greek Independence Day. This is when Greeks remember their long struggle against the Ottoman Empire\, an effort that eventually led to Greece’s independence. This day\, in fact\, marks the beginning of the Greek War for Independence\, not the end. \nIt also coincides with the Greek Orthodox Church’s celebration of the Annunciation to the Theotokos\, when the Archangel Gabriel appeared to Mary and told her that she would bear the son of God. \nGreece had been part of the Ottoman Empire since 1453. The Greek revolt was initiated on March 25\, 1821\, when Bishop Germanos of Patras raised the flag of revolution over the Monastery of Agia Lavra in the Peloponnese. The cry “Freedom or Death” became the motto of the revolution. \nDue to the current Covid 19 pandemic\, celebrations are limited and instead only a small number of activities will be organised. The Greek Department will set up 5 thematic stations for the Greek Revolution which will be presented by the Y11 Greek IAL and GCSE students to the primary students. This will be followed up in class with relevant activities in the context of the Greek lessons. \nIn addition\, primary Y5 and Y6 students will have the opportunity to march in a parade for freedom around the school led by the top six Y13 students (pictured above) as flagbearers. Secondary students would usually be parading through the streets of Paphos on the 25th of March but this was not possible this year. \nHappy Greek Independence Day! \nΧΡΟΝΙΑ ΠΟΛΛΑ ΕΛΛΑΔΑ!
